Ima Izakaya in Detroit’s Corktown historic district is a 2023 James Beard finalist for Best Restaurant in the Great Lakes. At 2100 Michigan Avenue, this real Japanese izakaya has become a mainstay of Detroit’s restaurant scene since opening its original store.
What Makes Ima Izakaya Special?
As visitors enter, they are greeted by a vibrant floor-to-ceiling stained glass vestibule to a 14-seat bar area that’s dressed with greenery and antique sake memorabilia. Handcrafted herringbone ceilings constructed from reclaimed wood and salvaged gymnasium flooring grace the restaurant, providing a cozy, rustic atmosphere complete with considerate design elements throughout.
Skewers of fresh meat and vegetables are grilled on a 1600-degree Japanese robata grill, one of the few in the region, providing high-quality, consistent preparation. The kitchen prepares hand-daily dumplings and handcrafts signature broths that serve as the base for their diverse ramen, udon, and noodle selection. The raw bar features fresh hand rolls of sushi and sashimi, in addition to Japanese golden curry, barbecued eel, house-smoked salmon, and fresh ahi tuna poke.
